History
Cyrene
Over the years we have done extensive historical research on CYRENE and Zeeland Yawls in general. Although we don’t know exactly how many Zeelands were imported to the U.S., we have located approximately 30 of them. CYRENE is hull #19. Many of the owners – past and present – have been in contact with each other. We have amassed an interesting library of letters and emails, photos, brochures, etc. documenting the rich history of these beautiful boats. A current Zeeland owner maintains a perpetual record of the boats and their whereabouts and we’re always on the lookout for others! Zeeland Yawls L. Moerman of Schiedam, Holland, an experienced sailor, designed and built the Zeeland Yawls originally for his family in the early 1950s. He wanted to build a beautiful ship that he could take pride in owning and sailing. He also wanted to build a boat that was fast enough to win races in the rugged North Sea and English Channel. His Zeeland design was a sea-kindly hull form, with a graceful sheer, high bow and generous bulwarks which keep her decks free of water even in steep, choppy seas. The boat was comfortable and dry on deck and below and easy to handle in any weather with only his family as crew. The Zeeland’s steel hull, deck and cabin are welded into one single water-tight unit. The interior layout was planned to make the best use of every available foot of space. Stained glass leaded panes added an authentic Dutch touch. In colder climates, where winter storage is necessary, the Zeeland can be kept in wet storage, even where freezing temperatures and ice are common, without damage. In warmer climates, there is never a worry about dry rot in the hot tropical sun. These Zeeland’s are built to last a lifetime! |
