CYRENE is a 37’ Zeeland Yawl designed and built in 1956 by L. Moerman in Holland. These boats were imported to the U.S. by Mobaco Marine of Stamford, CT. Previous owners sailed CYRENE in the Caribbean, Florida, Texas, Alaska, and California (San Francisco Bay Area, Oceanside, Los Angeles and San Diego). We purchased her in 1991 in Oakland, CA and sailed her in San Francisco Bay for several years. Then in 1999 we departed San Francisco and sailed down the California coast to Baja and on to the Mexican mainland, where we cruised until 2003. We returned to San Diego and have enjoyed sailing CYRENE locally in Southern California waters. Inside and out, CYRENE is gorgeous, with the classic lines of a wood boat but done in steel. The warm interior of African mahogany trim coupled with bright, neutral-colored bulkheads creates an inviting and comfortable living space. CYRENE has recently completed an extensive multi-year restoration project both internally and externally. She has a new engine and new electronics, along with most components and systems, including numerous upgrades. Looking at CYRENE’s hull closely you would never know it is steel. As part of the restoration, her topsides were taken down to bare metal, primered with 3 coats of ProLine epoxy, and then beautifully faired in painstaking detail by a professional. Two coats of Awlgrip LPU make her shine better than new and show off the expertise that went into the fairing. Below the water line, she was sandblasted and painted with 3 coats of Pettit epoxy barrier coat and 2 coats of bottom paint in Nov. 2013. On the water CYRENE is a pleasure to sail. The Zeeland’s classic yawl rig offers wonderful flexibility for cruising. When the wind is strong, sailing with the mizzen and a small jib alone is a great combination. Off the wind, a mizzen staysail is an easy-to-manage sail that adds quite a bit of speed. Even at anchor, the mizzen is an asset. When anchored in a gentle crosscurrent, keeping the mizzen hoisted and sheeted in hard will easily bring the bow into the wind. Even in normal anchorage conditions, holding the bow steadfastly into the wind reduces strain on the rode and anchor compared to a vessel that yaws or "sails at anchor", thus lessening the risk of chafe and dragging. CYRENE is immaculate and in perfect shape. She’s structurally and mechanically sound. She’s a real head turner, both at the dock and on the water. |
